EUAA and FRA have published updated practical tools for guardians of unaccompanied children with international protection needs. These resources are intended to support guardians in their daily responsibilities throughout asylum and related procedures, including those under the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation and temporary protection.
The publications form part of a joint series of four complementary guides covering:
- Temporary protection
- Introduction to international protection
- The asylum procedure
- Transnational procedures
Together, these guides are designed to help guardians better inform and assist children, strengthen their understanding of the various procedural stages, and support children’s meaningful participation and informed decision-making throughout the process.
The two latest updated publications are:
- Practical Tool for Guardians: Introduction to International Protection
- Practical Tool for Guardians: The Asylum Procedure
The Introduction to International Protection tool provides newly appointed guardians with an overview of the concept of international protection, the different forms of protection that may be granted through the asylum process, and the rights of children throughout the procedure.
The Asylum Procedure tool supports guardians, as well as trained individuals temporarily acting as guardians, in assisting children during the screening phase and throughout the asylum procedure.
By strengthening the knowledge and capacity of guardians, these practical tools promote consistent, rights-based support for unaccompanied children across EU Member States. They also help guardians navigate the evolving legal and procedural framework established under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, enabling them to effectively represent and support children seeking or benefiting from international protection.
We encourage you to share these resources with colleagues and stakeholders who may find them useful.
